How to Test a Keyboard

The fastest way to check whether every key on your keyboard works is a real-time on-screen test. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press the keys on your keyboard one by one. Each key you press lights up red instantly, and previously tested keys stay highlighted in green.
  2. To scan the whole keyboard, start from the top-left and work through every key in order; the progress bar above shows how many keys have been tested.
  3. To check multi-key support, hold down several keys at once (for example W, A, S, D and Shift) β€” the counter in the "Multi-Key Test" section shows how many are detected simultaneously.
  4. If you want to test a different physical layout, switch between "Turkish Q" and "US QWERTY" using the layout selector above.

If a key produces no reaction on screen, it's either a hardware fault or it isn't sending any signal to the browser at all β€” check the troubleshooting section below.

Keyboard Key Not Working: Common Causes

Physical dirt or liquid contact

Dust, crumbs, or spilled liquid under a keycap can physically obstruct the switch mechanism. On mechanical keyboards the keycap can be removed and cleaned; on laptop keyboards, compressed air is usually enough.

Wireless connection issues

Bluetooth or 2.4GHz wireless keyboards can drop some keypresses due to connection interruptions. Check the battery level and plug the USB receiver directly into your computer rather than through a hub.

Driver or OS-level issues

Rarely, outdated keyboard drivers or an incorrect keyboard layout setting at the OS level can cause some keys to behave incorrectly or stop working. Try the keyboard on another device to tell whether the issue is hardware or software.

Ghosting / limited simultaneous key support

Cheap membrane keyboards in particular can fail to register some keys as more are pressed simultaneously. This isn't a fault, just a hardware limitation; for gaming or other multi-key use, look for a keyboard with NKRO or at least 6-key rollover (anti-ghosting) support.

Frequently Asked Questions

A key on my keyboard isn't working, what should I do?

First check whether dust or debris has built up under the keycap; for wireless keyboards, check the battery level and try plugging the USB receiver into a different port. For wired keyboards, try a different cable or USB port. If the problem persists, update your keyboard drivers or try the keyboard on another computer.

What is ghosting, and how do I know if my keyboard has it?

Ghosting happens when a keyboard fails to register some keys while multiple keys are pressed at once β€” a real problem during gaming. Use the multi-key test section above to hold down several keys at once and see how many are detected.

Can I test my laptop keyboard and an external keyboard at the same time?

Yes, this tool listens to whichever keyboard input is currently active in your operating system. Test them one at a time by switching focus between the laptop keyboard and an external one.

Why aren't some special keys (Fn, power button) tested?

Keys like Fn and the power button are processed at the hardware level and never sent to the browser as a key-press event, so no web-based tool can test them.

Some characters don't appear correctly, what's wrong?

This is usually caused by the wrong keyboard layout being selected in your operating system. Check your system's language and keyboard settings and make sure the layout matches your physical keyboard.

My wireless keyboard has input lag, can this page measure it?

This tool shows whether a key is detected at all, but it doesn't measure precise input lag in milliseconds. If you suspect lag, check the battery level, plug the USB receiver directly into your computer, and prefer a 2.4GHz connection over Bluetooth where possible.
